About Siltstone Wines
Siltstone is easy to drive past. The tasting room sits directly off Highway 18 on the Dayton Bypass, small and understated, and the winery makes around a thousand cases a year. What is behind it is a good deal longer-standing than the building suggests.
Joel Myers planted his first grapes in the 1960s and has farmed wine grapes professionally since 1980 alongside his wife Louise. The Siltstone label itself was established in 2000, and two of their sons, Joey and David, work in the business today. David's wife Heather runs the tasting room and the marketing. Another son, John, helped build the business before going into law.
Fruit comes from the family's own sites: Guadalupe Vineyard, Blacktail Vineyard and Owl Ranch Vineyard, all farmed Certified Sustainable through the Food Alliance. The wines are estate-grown Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and a rose of Pinot Noir, with Muller-Thurgau and Chardonnay also appearing.
The room itself is open and light, seats well under thirty, and is unusually relaxed about children, keeping toys, games and snacks on hand. The tasting fee is waived with a bottle purchase. It is a working farm family's tasting room rather than a destination build, which is much of the appeal.
Grapes planted here since the 1960s, about a thousand cases a year, and toys for the kids.
