Starfield Vineyards & Winery is named for the starfield — the vast field of stars visible from the high-elevation Fair Play estate on clear Sierra Nevada nights. At 2,800 feet elevation, far from the light pollution of the Sacramento Valley below, the night sky above the estate reveals the Milky Way in its full density, the starfield that urban and suburban California can no longer see.
The Fairplay Road estate produces Zinfandel, Barbera, Grenache, and Tempranillo from Fair Play AVA estate vineyard blocks where the same elevation that reveals the starfield creates the dramatic diurnal temperature swings — 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit — that produce wines of natural acidity and structural tension.
