Sunset Suisun

Sunset Suisun is the current name of the shared tasting destination formerly known as the Suisun Valley Wine Co-op. The property at 4495 Suisun Valley Road gives small producers a collective place to pour, with Sunset Cellars at the center of the experience and partner wineries adding different grape varieties and winemaking perspectives. The shared model is important for visitors to understand because several brands may be available in one room, but they do not represent separate physical winery stops at the same address.

Sunset Cellars began in 1997 when Doug and Katsuko Sparks moved from home winemaking in a San Francisco garage to their first commercial vintage at a shared facility in Alameda. They later developed relationships with growers in several Northern California regions and moved production to Suisun Valley in 2007, where they helped establish the original wine cooperative. The family's "Zen Zin" approach favors gentle handling, restrained oak and an emphasis on fruit and vineyard character. Sunset Cellars is particularly associated with red wines such as Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah and Charbono, while occasional white wines broaden the lineup.

The tasting room can also introduce visitors to wines from partner producers, including brands such as King Andrews Vineyards and Blacksmith Cellars when those wines are being poured. That variety makes Sunset Suisun useful for comparing styles without driving between multiple rural locations. The people pouring are often closely connected to the wines, preserving the educational, producer-led spirit of the former cooperative.

Sunset Suisun is open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., with Friday and Saturday hours extending to 6 p.m. The relaxed indoor and outdoor setting is well suited to visitors who enjoy small-production wines and conversation with the people behind them. Travelers looking for a particular partner brand can confirm the current tasting lineup before arriving.

The house style is summed up as Zen Zin - a minimalist approach that hand-sorts fruit, ferments in small half-ton lots with hand punch-downs, and uses restrained new oak so the vineyard character comes through. Sunset Cellars emphasizes red varieties such as Barbera, Petite Sirah, Syrah, Zinfandel and Charbono, with the occasional white, all made in small quantities.

In 2007 Sunset Cellars founded the shared tasting room now known as Sunset Suisun (formerly the Suisun Valley Wine Co-op) on Suisun Valley Road, where several family micro-wineries pour side by side, often with the actual winemakers behind the bar. The relaxed room is generally open Wednesday through Sunday, and because production is small, the wines are found mainly here, so it is best to confirm current hours before visiting.
