About Temperance Cellars

Temperance Cellars is Lompoc's best inside joke: the town was founded in 1874 as a Temperance Colony where alcohol was banned, only for its surrounding hills to prove some of the greatest wine-growing land on the planet. Lompoc native Justin Charbonneau launched the label in 2012 as a tongue-in-cheek homage to his hometown's dry, short-lived origins, and keeps a placard on the Temperance movement in the winery.

Production is genuinely tiny, around 500 cases, hand-crafted from some of the county's most prestigious vineyards, with Charbonneau tasting in the rows through late summer and picking only when the fruit is exactly where he wants it. The list runs from Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to Albarino, Grenache, Sangiovese, Syrah, Merlot and the Rhone-style Moderation red blend.

Tastings are by appointment, Friday through Sunday, in the working cellar just across the street from the Wine Ghetto, and it is the winemaker himself who pours the current releases, hometown stories included.
