About Tendril Wine Cellars
Tendril is Tony Rynders' personal label, and the CV behind it is unusual. Two years as assistant winemaker at Argyle, three as red winemaker at Hogue Cellars, then ten years as head winemaker at Domaine Serene and Rockblock Cellars, where he developed more than twenty-five different wines and collected more ninety-plus Wine Spectator scores than any other winemaker over that stretch. He launched a consulting business in 2008 and still advises Saffron Fields, Panther Creek, Open Claim and Maggy Hawk.
Tendril itself launched in 2010 with a single bottling from the 2008 vintage. The name refers to the curling appendage a young vine uses to pull itself up the trellis, which fits a house philosophy summarised as slow wine: small separate fermentations, continual work in the vineyard, longer ageing, and an admission on the winery's own site that the approach is not always successful.
The wines are blends rather than single-site bottlings by design. Rynders treats vineyards the way a painter treats a palette, drawing traits from Saffron Fields and Mount Richmond in Yamhill-Carlton and Clay Court and Carabella in the Chehalem Mountains to hit a consistent style year to year. He has also planted Maverick Vineyard in Yamhill-Carlton, four acres of Chardonnay and ten of Californian heritage Pinot Noir clones.
The winery moved into Carlton in late 2019 and shares its home with Child's Play, the lighter sister label, whose bottles carry artwork by Rynders' daughters Madeline and Audrey and include one of the very few still Pinot Chardonnays made anywhere. Tastings are seated and winemaker-led, running five or six wines as a progressive tasting, on the lawn, on a covered terrace with fire pits, or indoors.
