Afton lies at the western edge of the Monticello AVA, tucked against the Blue Ridge Mountains near Rockfish Gap where Albemarle and Nelson Counties meet. Higher elevations and dramatic mountain views set the area apart, and its wineries form the northern anchor of the popular Nelson 151 trail of wineries, breweries, and cideries.
Estates like Veritas, Afton Mountain, Cardinal Point, and Flying Fox make the most of well-drained mountain slopes to produce Viognier, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Bordeaux-style blends.
