Monticello AVA
Thomas Jefferson's Monticello overlooks Virginia's most acclaimed wine corridor, where Cabernet Franc and Viognier shine on red clay soils in the Blue Ridge foothills around Charlottesville.
About Monticello AVA
The Monticello AVA surrounds Charlottesville in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and its name honors Thomas Jefferson's lifelong dream of growing European wine grapes in Virginia. That dream has been realized by a generation of ambitious winemakers working with Cabernet Franc, Viognier, Merlot, and Petit Verdot on the region's distinctive red clay soils. Barboursville Vineyards, established by the Italian Zonin family in 1976, was among the first to demonstrate Virginia's potential, and today producers like Early Mountain Vineyards, King Family Vineyards, and Veritas Vineyard produce wines that earn serious national attention. The Monticello AVA benefits from the Blue Ridge's rain shadow effect, which reduces humidity and disease pressure during the growing season. Charlottesville itself offers an exceptional base for wine tourism, with world-class restaurants, the University of Virginia, and Jefferson's Monticello estate all within easy reach of dozens of tasting rooms.
