About Alto Pass Wine Country
Alto Pass is the epicenter of Illinois wine country — a tiny village in the Shawnee Hills where Alto Vineyards, Owl Creek, and a cluster of estate producers have built something genuinely worth the drive from Chicago or St. Louis. The ancient sandstone ridgelines of the Shawnee National Forest provide the terrain and the soils; the producers have provided the vision.
The Shawnee Hills AVA produces Norton, Chambourcin, Chardonel, and Vignoles with a mineral character that reflects the ancient geology. October visits reward with fall color that rivals any wine country in America — the hardwood forests surrounding the vineyards turn in waves of orange, red, and gold against the pale sandstone outcrops.
For visitors making the drive, the Shawnee Hills reward a full weekend — Giant City State Park, Garden of the Gods, the Cache River wetlands, and the wine trail together create one of the most complete outdoor-and-wine experiences in the Midwest.
