Galena Wine Country

Galena is one of the Midwest's great small towns, a perfectly preserved 19th-century Main Street climbing a hillside above the Galena River, with wine tasting rooms woven into the Victorian storefronts. Galena Cellars anchors the wine scene with both an estate vineyard outside town and a downtown tasting room on Main Street, pouring cold-hardy hybrids and fruit wines.

The town sits in the Driftless Area, the only part of the Midwest that glaciers missed,giving the landscape a rolling, almost European character unique in Illinois. The terrain's diverse microclimates and south-facing slopes support viticulture in ways that the flat corn country to the east simply cannot.

Wine touring in Galena is part of a broader weekend experience: Main Street shopping, historic architecture (Ulysses S. Grant's pre-war home, the DeSoto House Hotel), farm-to-table dining, and outdoor recreation in the surrounding hills. The town draws 1.5 million visitors annually, and wine is increasingly central to the appeal.
