About Trefethen Family Vineyards
Trefethen Family Vineyards is a historic Oak Knoll District estate where the original winery, family villa, vineyards and culinary gardens remain part of one working property. The family has farmed and made wine here since 1968, giving the visit a clear sense of continuity. Guests can choose a straightforward flight in the historic winery or reserve a more involved tour or food pairing.
The estate portfolio includes Chardonnay, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and limited wines such as HāLo. The Winery Flights offer a Main Ranch or seasonal selection, while the Reserve Tasting focuses on smaller-production wines with charcuterie. Vineyard tours connect the rows directly to the cellar, and culinary reservations use produce from the nearby garden.
All tastings and tours require reservations, and guests under 21 are not permitted to attend. The one-hour Winery Flight is the entry option. The 90-minute Vineyard Tour adds the vines and cellar, while Reserve and Taste the Estate experiences take place in the Villa and add food. Private meals and customized groups can be arranged directly.
The historic winery and Villa create two different environments. The production building provides architectural and agricultural context, while the Villa and gardens support a slower culinary experience. The Oak Knoll location is convenient between Napa and Yountville and avoids a mountain drive.
Trefethen is best for adults who want estate history, broad varietal choice or a serious wine-and-food pairing. Reserve the basic flight for a shorter visit, the vineyard tour for education or the Villa experience when food is central. Confirm dietary restrictions because the menu cannot accommodate every need, and do not bring children or unregistered guests.
Eugene and Katie Trefethen's 1968 Oak Knoll estate, built around Napa's only surviving 19th-century wooden gravity-flow winery.
✓
Built by the architect of Inglenook and Far Niente,Hamden McIntyre designed Trefethen's 1886 winery using the same wooden gravity-flow system he built at several of Napa Valley's other historic estates.
✓
An accidental hospitality partnership,Trefethen shared its winery with Domaine Chandon's earliest harvests in 1973, while the French Champagne house built its own facility, a collaboration that led to the discovery that night-harvested grapes made more aromatic wine.
✓
100% estate-grown, no exceptions,Trefethen has never purchased grapes from outside growers since its founding, farming every block of its Oak Knoll vineyards internally rather than outsourcing the work.
"Wino Notion likes how Trefethen keeps the historic winery, family Villa, vineyard and culinary garden connected. Visitors can choose a simple flight or a complete estate-and-food experience without changing properties."
