About Urban Legend Cellars

Urban Legend Cellars was founded by Marilee and Steve Shaffer, a former biologist and engineer who wanted to build something together after more than 30 years as a couple. They set out to make wine the way they wanted to drink it, food friendly and honest, choosing to build their winery in the city rather than out among the vines, first in Oakland and now in Alameda's Spirits Alley on the former Naval Air Station.

The winery hand crafts more than a dozen wines from grapes sourced across California, from Barbera and Sangiovese to Cabernet Sauvignon and Vermentino, guided by the belief that a great winemaker's method matters more than proximity to the vineyard. Tastings run Thursday through Sunday from 1 to 7pm, with seating by reservation only.
