About Brooklyn West Winery
Brooklyn West Winery brings wine country to the Jack London Square Warehouse District. The name is a double nod: winemaker Stew Epstein and his wife Michelle are both children of Brooklyn natives who moved west, and the surrounding stretch of East Oakland was itself once the town of Brooklyn, California before Oakland annexed it in 1872. Stew met co-winemaker Jeffrey Fiegel across a wine bar counter over a glass of Stew's own Tempranillo - Jeffrey, then studying winemaking at Fresno State, shared his passion for Spanish and Iberian wines, and the partnership stuck. The winery was established in 2016, with production based in Sonoma's Alexander Valley and fruit sourced from vineyards across Northern California.
Tempranillo is the calling card - Brooklyn West was among the first American wineries to specialize in the grape, blending Old World technique with New World fruit, and the winery credits its Tempranillo as an early 90-point scorer among American bottlings of the variety. The small-lot, minimal-intervention lineup runs from old vine Zinfandel made in the 1970s style and Piedmont-inspired reds to crisp Sauvignon Blanc and vibrant Rose.
The tasting lounge at 2nd and Jackson, in a brick warehouse space designed by architect David Baker, runs more like a neighborhood wine bar than a wine country tasting room - flights and wines by the glass, seasonal mocktails, and a picnic-style spread of cheeses, olives, and charcuterie, with a winemaker on site to talk you through the pours. Walk-ins are welcome Thursday and Friday evenings and weekend afternoons, reservations run through Tock, and leashed dogs are welcome inside - water and treats provided.
