About Viano Vineyards
Viano Vineyards is a fourth and fifth generation family estate on the hillsides above Martinez, in Contra Costa County. The Viano family acquired the property in 1920, drawn to a landscape that reminded them of their home in Piedmont, Italy, and the site itself carries even deeper roots - the original vineyard here was planted in 1888, back when this pocket of the county, known as Vine Hill, supported more than fifteen wineries.
The estate benefits from cooling breezes off the Carquinez Straits, a microclimate that supports an unusually broad planting for the Bay Area: Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, French Colombard, Muscat Canelli, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay, Petite Sirah, Sangiovese, and Zinfandel. Some original vines still stand alongside carefully replanted blocks.
Farming is natural and sustainable, and the winemaking leans traditional - native yeast fermentations and aging in small oak barrels. The tasting room is open Wednesday through Monday, 9am to 5pm, and closed Tuesdays.
Planning a visit: the tasting room sits midway between the Livermore Valley and the Napa and Sonoma Valleys, and tastings are offered Wednesday through Monday from 9am to 4pm. Reservations are highly recommended, especially for groups of 4 or more - call (925) 228-6465 to book. Groups under 8 taste for $10 per person with 5 samples of your choice; groups of 8 or more are $15 per person with 5 samples and reservations required. Groups are capped at 15 people, and non-drinkers and underage guests count toward the total. Tastings are held indoors, with outdoor seating upon availability - mention it when booking. In 2026 the winery is closed January 1, April 5, July 4, November 26, and December 25, with shortened 9am to 3pm hours on December 24.
