About A Walk in the Woods Winery
A Walk in the Woods Winery at 39770 De Portola Road is one of Temecula Valley's most charmingly named and naturally situated estate wineries, nestled among the oak-studded hills of the De Portola Wine Trail on the western edge of the appellation. Founded in 2010, the winery embraces its forested, off-the-beaten-path character, the name itself is an invitation to slow down, leave the busier Rancho California Road corridor behind, and discover what Temecula Valley wine looks like when it's surrounded by trees rather than traffic.
The De Portola Road location gives A Walk in the Woods access to the cooler, more marine-influenced western side of the Temecula Valley AVA, where afternoon breezes from the Pacific moderate temperatures and extend the growing season compared to the warmer valley floor. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Viognier are the primary productions, reflecting both the estate's warm-climate strengths and the aromatic white wine character that Viognier achieves particularly well in Temecula's dry, sun-warmed growing conditions.
The winery's rustic, woodland aesthetic is a deliberate counterpoint to Temecula Valley's more polished estate destinations, picnic areas under the oaks, a relaxed and unhurried tasting room atmosphere, and the kind of personal hospitality that small family wineries deliver when they haven't outgrown their original character. The Friday through Sunday schedule keeps the operation intimate and the experience genuinely personal.
Walk-ins are welcome Friday through Sunday from 11am to 5pm with a $20 tasting fee. The De Portola Road setting makes A Walk in the Woods a natural pairing with neighboring estates on the trail, including Lumiére and other westside producers who share the corridor's quieter, more agricultural character. For visitors to Temecula Valley who want something genuinely different from the large event-venue wineries, this is the detour worth taking.
