About Weatherborne Wine Corp.

Weatherborne Wine Corp. is the life's work of Cris Carter, a UC Davis-trained winemaker from a family of aviators who founded the label with his father Nick in Santa Barbara's Sta. Rita Hills in 2012, then moved the whole operation north after buying 30 acres of old apple orchard and pasture in Anderson Valley in 2015. The name is literal: the weather each year shapes what ends up in the bottle.

The wines are limited-production Pinot Noir, Grenache and Chenin Blanc from organic Anderson Valley and Mendocino County grapes, made with plenty of whole-cluster fermentation, minimal new oak, and bottled unfined and unfiltered with minimal processing and no additions. The style prizes freshness and structure without heaviness, and the lineup stretches to Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and rose.

The tasting room opened in late 2020 at the I and E Lath Mill in downtown Philo, a striking redwood building of reclaimed timber in front of the valley's last operating lumber mill. There is a dog-friendly patio and picnic area, and on weekends the person pouring your flight is very often the winemaker himself.

A career winemaker's whole-cluster, unfined Pinot and Grenache poured in a reclaimed-redwood room at Philo's last lumber mill.

Winemaking as a vocationCris Carter went to UC Davis at eighteen and has only ever worked in vineyards, labs and cellars; it shows in the glass.
