About Whalebone Vineyard
Whalebone takes its name literally: fossilized whale bones, remnants of the ancient seabed underlying west Paso's calcareous hills, were unearthed on the Simpson family's Anderson Road property and are displayed at the winery. Bob Simpson, a physician, planted Cabernet Sauvignon on the limestone slopes of the Adelaida District, and the family label grew from those first estate rows.
The wines center on estate Cabernet and warm-hearted red blends, poured in a stone tasting room with the namesake fossils on view. The combination of paleontology and Cabernet makes Whalebone one of the west side's most memorable small-family stops.
