About White Salmon Vineyard
White Salmon Vineyard is Peter Brehm's estate on Underwood Mountain, on the Washington side of the Columbia Gorge. Brehm began selling wine grapes in 1971 and bought a declining pear orchard in Underwood in 1989, replanting it as a vineyard. He describes himself as self-educated in both viticulture and enology, with more than forty years in wine production that included work at Buena Vista in Napa Valley and Cape Mentelle in Western Australia, after an earlier working life spanning economics, business, law school, commercial fishing and the Peace Corps.
The estate runs two labels. White Salmon Vineyard is the wine, with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Syrah, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and rose; Brehm Vineyards is the grape business, shipping frozen fruit year round to home winemakers, wineries, wine clubs and breweries. The tasting room is in the historic Underwood Mercantile building where Cook-Underwood Road meets State Route 14, and it pours alongside specialty small plates, including smoked salmon on crackers with cheese, aromatics and dill, a deli plate, and seasonal fruit with whipped cream and chocolate.
The vineyard address is 391 Newell Road, Underwood, WA 98651, and the tasting room is listed at 63281 WA-14 in Underwood. The winery does not publish tasting room hours, a tasting fee or a reservation policy on its site, so treat this as a call-ahead stop rather than a drop-in. Allow about an hour, and bear in mind that the Washington bank of the Gorge is the quieter and slower drive. Confirm current hours, fees and reservation policy with the winery before you go.
