From late August through October, the vineyards transform from quiet green rows into a buzzing operation where crews pick grapes at dawn, crush pads run all day, and the air fills with the sweet, earthy, slightly yeasty scent of fermenting fruit. It is the one time of year when winemaking comes out of the cellar and into plain view.
