About Absentee Winery
Absentee Winery is a small, one-person natural-wine label founded by winemaker Avi Deixler in 2016, based in Point Reyes in Marin County. Deixler runs what is described as the only registered winery in the North Marin Wine District, working out of a barn on a former dairy farm on the Marin coast after petitioning the Marin County Planning Commission for the right to make wine there.
Deixler trained at wineries across California, Oregon, Australia and France before starting Absentee with a single guiding rule: only grapes go in the bottle. The wines are made with native-yeast fermentation and little to no added sulfites, then bottled unfined and unfiltered. Fruit is sourced largely from organic, dry-farmed vineyards in Mendocino and Marin counties, including Poor Ranch, and the range centers on honest, drinkable reds and cuvees such as Red and Flaws.
Absentee is primarily a small-production, allocation and club-driven label rather than a walk-in tasting destination, and Deixler has spoken about developing a facility in Mendocino County closer to much of his fruit.
