About Adelaida Vineyards & Winery
Adelaida Vineyards & Winery is one of Paso Robles's most historically west-side-limestone-pioneering and personally family-50-year-continuously-committed wine estates. The van Steenwyk family — who purchased the Adelaida Road property in 1981 before the Paso Robles AVA existed, before the west-side calcareous limestone subregion was recognized as distinct from the east-side clay and alluvial growing environments, and before any significant critical attention had been directed toward Paso Robles as a fine wine producing region — demonstrated the most extraordinary viticultural foresight in identifying the Adelaida District's calcareous limestone and significant elevation as ideal for the most minerally structured and age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon and Rhône variety wines in the western Paso Robles corridor.
The Adelaida District terrain — where exposed calcareous white limestone outcroppings, marine fossil deposits in the soil profile, significant elevation above the Salinas River valley floor, and dramatic diurnal temperature swings that can exceed 50°F between daily maximum and minimum temperatures create growing conditions of extraordinary vine stress and natural concentration — produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Viognier of mineral precision and structural depth unavailable from any lower-elevation or less-calcareous-specific Paso Robles growing environment.
Wine Advocate has consistently recognized Adelaida's estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah at 92–96 points for the limestone mineral structure and individual Adelaida District character that 40+ years of van Steenwyk family accumulated single-site calcareous west-side Paso Robles farming knowledge produces in the most historically pioneering and personally family-continuously-committed Adelaida District wine estate.
