About Alapay Cellars
Alapay Cellars is named for the Chumash word for the Cambria and San Simeon coastal area, alapay, the indigenous place name for the territory the Chumash people inhabited along this stretch of the Central Coast for thousands of years before Spanish colonization. Using the Chumash name is an act of geographic acknowledgment: this wine comes from Chumash land, and Alapay declares that provenance in the language of the land's original inhabitants.
The Olivine Road estate in the Cambria coastal zone produces Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Pacific-fog-influenced vineyards where the daily marine layer keeps temperatures cool and extends the growing season far beyond what Paso Robles' inland climate allows. The Chumash coastal identity in the name aligns with the maritime character of the wines.
