About Albini Family Vineyards
Albini Family Vineyards is about as hands-on as a winery gets. Don Albini founded the small operation in Windsor, in the Russian River Valley, in 1991, and he still does nearly everything himself, with help from family, friends, and the occasional volunteer rather than any paid staff. The winery makes just two wines, a Russian River Valley Merlot and a Zinfandel, from estate fruit, and total production runs only a few hundred cases a year.
The approach in the cellar is deliberately old-fashioned. Grapes are hand-picked and sorted, fermented with native yeast in small open-top bins, and punched down by hand several times a day; the wine is moved by bucket rather than pump, basket-pressed, then bottled unfiltered by hand. It is low-yield, low-intervention winemaking done at a scale most wineries left behind decades ago.
Visits are by appointment only, and Don hosts them personally. Expect a relaxed, conversational sit-down in the working barn, part tasting and part wine-history lesson, with library and reserve pours, rather than a polished tasting-room experience. For anyone who wants to meet the person who grew, made, and bottled the wine in their glass, this is the real thing.
