About Alpen Cellars
Alpen Cellars is a family-owned winery established in 1984, tucked into a mountain valley at the foot of the Trinity Alps in the Trinity Lake region of Trinity County, in far Northern California. The family arrived in the area a century ago as gold miners, and the ranch, dating to 1855, was planted to wine grapes beginning in 1981.
It is one of only a couple of commercial wineries in the small Trinity Lakes AVA, and is notable as an off-grid winery that runs on its own hydroelectric power. The high-elevation site favors early-maturing varieties, and Alpen produces White Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Merlot and Blaufrankisch, along with blends such as its Rose Gold. Winemaking is a hands-on family effort led by winemaker Keith Groves.
Tastings are seated outdoors in the East Fork valley and are free, with bottles available on-site and picnics encouraged. The winery is open to the public seven days a week from 10am to 4pm between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and by appointment the rest of the year. Because the drive is remote, it is best to use the winery's own directions and to call ahead for off-season or group visits.
