About Alta Orsa Winery

Alta Orsa Winery sits high above the Hopland valley floor at the end of a winding mountain road, a secluded 160-acre estate whose vineyard was originally planted in the late 1980s and has been stewarded since 2018 by winemaker Martin Bernal-Hafner. The farming is regenerative and organic to the core: no-till soils, no herbicides under the vines, minimal organic sprays, and a focus on biodiversity and long-term soil health.

The wines are small-lot and site-specific, drawn from the estate and partner heritage vineyards across the North Coast: Cabernet Sauvignon that has earned recognition as some of Mendocino's finest, along with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah, made with minimal intervention so the mountain fruit speaks plainly. Balance and age-worthiness, not weight, are the house signatures.

There is no conventional tasting room. Visits, by reservation, unfold outdoors at a simple table beneath a cork tree overlooking the vines and the valley beyond: a guided vineyard walk, a behind-the-scenes winery tour, and a seated tasting of five or more wines over an unhurried hour and a half or two, usually with Martin himself. The fee is waived with a three-bottle purchase, and the estate also welcomes Harvest Hosts travelers.
