About Ankida Ridge Vineyards

Ankida Ridge grows Burgundy at 1800 feet: Christine and Dennis Vrooman planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on an Amherst County granite ridge most experts called impossible, and the mountain microclimate answered with Pinots that national critics rank among the East's finest, the Sumerian name meaning where heaven and earth join.

Sheep-and-chicken vineyard ecology and tiny allocations complete the against-odds legend. Virginia's Pinot miracle, properly named.

Ankida Ridge has become the East Coast’s most talked-about Pinot Noir story: Christine and Dennis Vrooman planted two acres of decomposed granite at 1,800 feet in 2008 on the advice of famed viticulturalist Lucy Morton, and the 2011 debut drew national praise - Jancis Robinson herself judged the young wine unmistakably true Pinot. The site’s temperature inversion keeps air moving so spring frost has never seriously struck, and the vineyard has topped 90 degrees only once in seventeen years. The portfolio now spans Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, sparkling wine, and coming Gamay; the wines pour exclusively at Virginia’s Primland resort, and a mountain-view pavilion for small weddings and retreats is in the works.

The Vroomans' 1800-foot gamble: East Coast benchmark Pinot where heaven meets earth.
