About Apolloni Vineyards
Alfredo Apolloni is a first-generation American whose family has made wine in Italy for more than 150 years, with vineyards traced to the Arezzo area of Tuscany. He spent his boyhood summers working the family vineyard and villa there, then took an engineering degree at Carnegie Mellon and an MBA at Michigan - a background that still shows every harvest, when little equipment defeats him.
In 1999 he and his wife Laurine, an Indiana native and engineer herself, left the Midwest and bought a 62-acre property near Forest Grove that had just five acres of vines on it. The move was prompted by the birth of their son Adolfo and Alfredo's wish that his children grow up among vines as he had. The name carries its own tradition: each Apolloni generation produces either an Adolfo or an Alfredo, and the son is named for Alfredo's late father.
They have since added a nearby thirty-acre site and planted about forty more acres, and the estate now runs to roughly 90 acres with 45 under vine, sustainably farmed and Salmon Safe. The vineyard blocks are named for the middle names of the Apolloni children - Filippo, Olivia and Flaminia. The label reproduces a family coat of arms dating to the sixteenth century, with a black eagle for strength and the helm from the armour of the captains of Scalve.
The wines run in two directions at once: Oregon-styled Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on one hand, and on the other the stainless-fermented whites and Italian reds of the family tradition, including Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, plus sparkling. In 2022 Apolloni entered a joint operating alliance with neighbouring David Hill, sharing costs while both brands continue separately. The tasting room is family-friendly and dog-friendly, with bocce courts and lawns where visitors may bring their own food.
