About Apona Vineyards

Apona Vineyards is in Veneta, west of Eugene, which puts it in the southern Willamette Valley rather than the Dundee and Newberg cluster most visitors know. Afton Towry and Andrew Head founded it in 2018 on 100 acres of woodland, farmland and a working horse barn, and the equine history of the place is not incidental to the branding: the name comes from Epona, the ancient goddess associated with horses and harvest.

Thirty-two of those acres are planted to LIVE-certified vines carrying seven varietals, a wider spread than the Pinot-and-Chardonnay orthodoxy further north. The winery also runs a custom crush operation alongside its own label.

Winemaking is led by Chris Graves, who has taught wine courses at Southern Oregon University and at Umpqua Community College's Southern Oregon Wine Institute and sits on the Oregon Wine Board's Research Committee. He works with Jeff, who came up through Concannon as cellar master before stints at Rodrigue Molyneaux and Pallet Wine Company. Andrew Head's background is construction rather than wine; he spent thirty years running a roofing business.

Visits are by reservation, with wine flights and small plates in a deliberately intimate room looking out over the vines.

Away from the crowd,Veneta is west of Eugene, well south of the Dundee and Newberg tasting-room traffic.
Seven varietals,a wider planting than the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay orthodoxy of the northern valley, across thirty-two LIVE-certified acres.
A working farm, not a set,100 acres of woodland, farmland and a horse barn, and the name honours that history through the goddess Epona.
An experienced winemaker,Chris Graves has taught enology at two Oregon institutions and sits on the Oregon Wine Board's Research Committee.
"A young southern Willamette estate doing something broader than Pinot Noir, and doing it by appointment."
