About Arabilis
Allison and Kenny McMahon are a husband-and-wife team, and between them they hold two PhDs in wine science. That is an unusual amount of formal training for a small Oregon producer, and it shows in an approach they describe as marrying rigour with delight.
The name is Latin for arable, or farmable land. They do not own a vineyard yet, and the name is a statement of intent as much as description: it points at their partnership with the growers they buy from and at the ambition to farm their own ground eventually. The acorn on the label carries a related idea, that greatness has small beginnings.
Sparkling is where the attention has gone. They make methode traditionnelle wines and travel to Champagne to study with producers there, and the sparkling releases go out through club allocation rather than general release. Fruit comes from Eola-Amity Hills sites including Pearlstad, Stiling, Sojeau and Cortell-Rose, with Johan and Columbia Gorge fruit appearing in some bottlings. Still Chardonnay and Pinot Noir round out the range.
Visits are genuinely small: seated private tastings for up to six people, by appointment, in the working winery in downtown Amity. Expect one to two hours, conversation with the winemaker and a tour, and bring a layer, because you may be standing in the cellar or out on the crushpad.
