About Battaglini Estate Winery
Battaglini Estate Winery is a genuinely old-world, family-run operation in the Russian River Valley outside Santa Rosa. Giuseppe 'Joe' Battaglini grew up among the vines in Lucca, Tuscany, and met his wife, Lucia, who was raised in the vineyards of Mendoza, Argentina, after both landed in San Francisco. In 1988 the couple bought the historic, then-neglected Lagomarsino property and made their first vintage in 1994; today their children help run the place.
The heart of the estate is its vines. The Zinfandel and Petite Sirah were planted in 1885, among the oldest producing vines in the country, and they are still farmed the old-fashioned Italian way: dry-farmed, hand-pruned, and fermented with native yeast. The wines, mainly Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Chardonnay, are aged in barrel and then held in bottle for a couple of years before release, and library vintages reach back two decades.
Visits are by appointment and intentionally homespun. Tastings usually happen in a small, memorabilia-filled farmhouse room, hosted personally by Joe, Lucia or their son Dino, with a bocce court outside and, each October, a hands-on grape-stomping event. It is about as far from a polished corporate tasting room as Sonoma gets.
