About Big Table Farm
Big Table Farm is the joint work of winemaker Brian Marcy and artist and farmer Clare Carver. Marcy spent about a decade making wine in Napa and Sonoma, with a first harvest in 1996 and stints at Turley, Marcassin, Neyers and Blankiet, but wanted to work in a cooler climate; Carver wanted land she could farm on the rotational grazing model popularised by Joel Salatin. In 2006 they left California for Oregon, bought a farmhouse and property, and made 150 cases.
The name describes the intention rather than the scale: a gracious, well-stocked table of hand-made food and wine for themselves and their friends. Two decades on, the place is a 70-acre working farm with its own barn and winery, run as a regenerative system balancing water, soil, animals and vines.
The farming is not decorative. They raise heirloom chickens, pigs, goats and cattle fed off their own ground and sold CSA-style, smoke bacon and ham, cure prosciutto and guanciale, can fruit, dry beans and store root vegetables. Carver ploughs behind a team of Haflinger horses and keeps bees.
The wines are principally Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with Pinot Gris, Syrah and a rose alongside, and every label carries Carver's artwork - work that has drawn national attention in its own right. Tastings are held by appointment at the Atelier in Carlton, an in-town space that is also her working studio, and both the appointments and the wines have a habit of selling out well ahead.
