About Boedecker Cellars
Boedecker Cellars is a Portland winery rather than a Willamette Valley one, in the literal sense: the fruit comes from the valley but the wine is made in the city. Athena Pappas and Stewart Boedecker founded it in 2003, and after starting out at Oregon's first shared-use winery in Carlton they refurbished a 1956 warehouse in the Northwest Industrial District and moved production there in 2008.
Both are owner-winemakers, and they studied the same way, taking winemaking classes at UC Davis and Chemeketa. Stewart began making wine in 1992 while at Cornell and later volunteered at established Oregon wineries in exchange for the education; Athena is a native Portlander. Rather than blend their preferences away, they bottle wines separately under their own names, which has produced a long-running and openly acknowledged friendly rivalry between two distinct styles.
Pinot Noir is the house subject, treated as a range rather than a single expression, with vineyard-designated bottlings alongside the blends. They buy from growers across the Willamette Valley and use lease and partnership arrangements that let them direct the farming rather than simply take delivery of fruit.
The building is part of the appeal. It sits between the Willamette River and the wooded trails of Forest Park, with high rafters, Edison lights, half-walls of stacked barrels separating the tasting room from the working cellar, board games to borrow and a patio that welcomes dogs. Unusually for an urban winery, small groups can walk in without a reservation, and a flight runs to five wines with the tasting fee waived on a bottle purchase.
