About Broken Earth Winery
Broken Earth's ground has one of the best origin stories in Paso: in 1973, Hollywood actors Wayne Rogers of MASH, James Caan, Peter Falk and Jack Webb joined local visionary Herman Schwartz to plant 520 acres on Rancho Tierra Rejada, land of worked earth, a 2,500-acre former cattle ranch of the Miller & Lux era, creating the first large-scale vineyard on the Central Coast. Continental Vineyards, as it became known, grew grapes for Napa wineries through the 1970s and 80s while Schwartz pioneered sustainable farming, and winemakers traveled from around the world to see what Paso Robles could grow.
Replanted between 1995 and 1998 and sold to its current owners in 2006, the vineyard now carries roughly 713 acres on the Estrella Bench, thirteen miles east of downtown, certified California Sustainable with a 100 percent solar-powered winery and owl boxes among the vines. Broken Earth anchors the Continental Wine Collection alongside the allocated CV reserve tier and the everyday Pull label, with winemaking led in recent years by Australian veteran Chris Cameron, in Paso since 2007, and Paso lifer Ben Mayo, formerly Eberle's lead winemaker. The CV Cabernets and Studium red have drawn scores in the low 90s, proof the pioneer vineyard still delivers.
