About Cache Creek Vineyards & Winery
Cache Creek Vineyards sits in the eastern foothills of Lake County, a minute off Highway 20 between Interstate 5 and the Mendocino coast, on a 500-acre property that doubles as a refuge for the rare Tule Elk that roam along Cache Creek. Founder Bill "Poppo" Van Pelt began cultivating the land in 1997 with a double mission: grow world-class grapes and keep a flourishing habitat for the elk he visited daily. Herds still wander the property, and lucky visitors catch them grazing beyond the vines.
The wines are estate grown and sustainably farmed, spanning Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, rose, sparkling wine, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and red blends. The tasting room pours four flights: three at $15 covering classic, whites and rose, and red-focused lineups, plus a $20 reserve flight, each including a logo glass to take home. Wine club members taste free and can bring guests.
This is a winery built for lingering. The Italian-feeling grounds hold a shaded lawn, patio seating, bocce courts and picnic areas, and the deli case turns a tasting into lunch with panini, grilled cheese and warm brie topped with fig preserves. Dogs are welcome on the patio, RV parking is available, and the setting along the creek makes it a natural stop between the Sacramento Valley and Clear Lake.
A family estate where Tule Elk share 500 acres with the vines, and a bocce court, deli and creekside patio turn tastings into whole afternoons.
