About Calluna Vineyards
Calluna Vineyards is named for Calluna — the Latin genus name for heather, the low-growing purple-flowering shrub that carpets the Celtic moorlands of Scotland, Ireland, and northern England. The founders' choice of this botanical Latin name connects their Alexander Valley hillside vineyards to the ecological character that heather represents: resilience in poor soils, thriving on exposed hillsides where richer-soiled terrain would produce more vigorous growth.
The West Dry Creek Road estate produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, and Syrah from Alexander Valley volcanic hillside vineyard blocks where the poor-soil, exposed-hillside character that Calluna evokes actually does shape the vines' behavior. The botanical naming carries the ecological truth of the estate's terrain.
