About Carolina Heritage Vineyard & Winery

Carolina Heritage Vineyard & Winery near Elkin holds a distinction no other North Carolina winery can claim: it was the state's first organically farmed vineyard and winery. Established in 2005, the veteran- and family-owned operation sits in the Yadkin Valley AVA a few miles from downtown Elkin, and it remains the region's organic outlier.

The vineyard grows French-hybrid and native varieties suited to organic farming in the Piedmont, including Chambourcin and Cynthiana alongside muscadines such as Noble, Magnolia and Carlos, plus organically grown blueberries and elderberries that feed a line of fruit wines and mead. The range runs from dry to distinctly sweet, with seasonal oddities like Glogg and an apple pie wine that regulars come back for.

The wines are made without animal by-products, so the lineup is vegan-friendly and gluten-free, and the owners have pushed sustainability further with recyclable paper bottles. The tasting room is small and unpretentious, pours local craft beer for non-wine drinkers, allows picnics, and has a porch overlooking the vines where free-range chickens wander the property. It is a regular stop on the Surry County Wine Trail.

North Carolina's first organically farmed vineyard, with free-range chickens and a porch made for sipping.
