About Carter Cellars
Carter Cellars was founded in 1998 by Mark Carter, a Eureka, California native, working initially with veteran winemaker Nils Venge. The project has since passed through a short list of respected winemakers, from Mike Smith, who produced the wines from 2009 to 2020, to current winemaker Russell Bevan. Production takes place at Envy Winery in Calistoga rather than at a dedicated estate.
The house style centers on single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from some of Napa's most sought-after sites, including Beckstoffer's To Kalon in Oakville and Beckstoffer Las Piedras in St. Helena, alongside fruit from the Hossfeld, Fortuna, Weitz, Missouri Hopper, and Bourn vineyards. Total output runs 2,000 to 3,000 cases a year, split across bottlings usually capped under 350 cases apiece, each individually numbered.
Every bottling is capped under 350 numbered cases, aged entirely in new French oak, and released strictly by appointment to serious collectors.
