About Chalk Hill Estate Vineyards
Chalk Hill Estate Vineyards & Winery is one of Sonoma County's most geologically distinctive and complete estate experiences. The 1,300-acre Chalk Hill property sits within its own sub-appellation — the Chalk Hill AVA within the Russian River Valley — named for the distinctive white volcanic ash soils that cover the hillside vineyards and give the wines their characteristic mineral character that no other Sonoma County AVA can replicate.
Founded in 1974 by attorney Frederick Furth, the estate was acquired by Bill Foley — the Nevada hotel and gaming entrepreneur who also owns Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, Duckhorn Wine Company, and other premium wine properties — in 2010. The Foley acquisition brought significant investment in the estate's wine program, culinary facilities, and hospitality infrastructure while maintaining the focus on the Chalk Hill AVA's singular white volcanic ash terroir.
The Chalk Hill Chardonnay is the estate's most celebrated expression — the distinctive mineral soils producing a food-friendly, terroir-specific white that contrasts with the richer, rounder Chardonnays produced on Sonoma County's warmer valley floors. Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc round out a program that consistently demonstrates what a specific and genuinely unusual soil type produces when farmed with the care that 1,300 dedicated acres of single-AVA estate farming allows.
