About Clos LaChance Winery

Clos LaChance sits in the rolling hills of San Martin, about thirty minutes south of San Jose and forty-five minutes north of Monterey, with roughly 100 acres of estate vineyard spread around the tasting room and the sixth hole of the CordeValle golf course next door. It is one of the larger destinations in the Santa Clara Valley, an area that grew grapes long before Napa became shorthand for California wine.

The winery began in a Saratoga backyard. Bill and Brenda Murphy planted a few rows of Chardonnay in 1987, partly as landscaping, and the wine turned out well enough to sell. The first commercial release came from the 1992 vintage, and the operation grew from 200 cases to tens of thousands, and from three-quarters of an acre to about 150 acres planted. It remains family owned, and the family has said openly that they hope a third generation eventually takes it over.

The visit is built for lingering rather than rushing: a tasting room open Wednesday through Sunday, picnic facilities, bocce courts, and a live-music calendar that runs through the warmer months. The property is certified sustainable and doubles as a wedding and events venue, so a weekend visit may share the grounds with a celebration. Note that it is a 21-and-over facility.

A backyard Chardonnay planting in Saratoga that grew into 150 acres and one of the Santa Clara Valley's most visitable estates.
