About Compton Family Wines
Compton Family Wines is a family-owned winery in downtown Philomath, at the southern end of Oregon’s Willamette Valley near Corvallis. It was founded in 2003 by Matthew and Tabitha Compton, originally under the name Spindrift Cellars, with a simple guiding idea: make honest Oregon wines with minimal intervention that stay true to the character of the grape. Two decades on, that ethos still defines everything they pour.
Winemaker Matt Compton arrived in Corvallis at twenty-two to work for Oregon State University, managing a research farm for wine grapes, and that grounding in the vineyard still shapes his approach. The Comptons practice regenerative agriculture on their homestead and in the vineyards they manage, favoring dry farming, no tilling, cover crops, and adaptive grazing with animals. In the cellar, the handling is gentle and the goal is clarity and varietal purity.
The lineup centers on small-lot Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Blanc, sourced from Compton Family Farms and a set of trusted dry-farmed vineyards. The wines are made in modest quantities and have earned a steady run of recognition, including strong ratings and festival medals, while staying refreshingly approachable in both style and price.
The tasting room sits right where the winemaking happens, in the heart of Philomath, with the selection on pour changing every month so there is always a reason to return. Warm, unpretentious, and family-run, Compton Family Wines is an easy and rewarding stop for travelers exploring the quieter, less-trafficked corner of the Willamette Valley.
