About Cypher Winery
Cypher Winery takes its name from cryptography — the cipher, the coded message that carries meaning accessible only to those who can decode it. Applied to wine, the cypher philosophy declares that each wine encodes something about its vineyard, its vintage, and its making that the drinker must actively decode rather than passively receive.
The Oakdale Road estate in El Pomar District produces Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Zinfandel using biodynamic farming practices — the winemaking philosophy that treats the vineyard as a self-contained ecological system, using lunar cycles and plant-based preparations rather than synthetic inputs. Biodynamic farming adds another layer to the cipher: wines that express their terroir with unusual directness when the human interventions are reduced to those the land itself prescribes.
The daily walk-in tasting room is dog-friendly, picnic-welcoming, and family-hospitable — the cryptographic name is more intellectual than intimidating.
