About Dominio IV
Patrick Reuter and Leigh Bartholomew met at UC Davis, where he studied terroir and she studied viticulture, and spent the years after graduating working harvests across New Zealand, Burgundy, Chile, California and Washington. Leigh became vineyard manager at Archery Summit in 2000 and has since farmed vineyards across the valley; the couple founded Dominio IV in 2002.
The name is a piece of deliberate whimsy built on fours. There are four grape varieties, four seasons, four releases a year, and for a time a family of four; a labyrinth, with its four quadrants, appears on the label and is echoed in the vineyard, where rows are laid out as one.
The estate began in the Columbia Gorge, where they bought land near Mosier with Leigh's parents and planted Tempranillo, Syrah and Viognier at what became the Demeter-certified biodynamic Three Sleeps Vineyard, adding small parcels of Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot in 2012. In 2017 they planted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay at a second estate site in Carlton, and farming throughout uses compost, herbs and no-till practice to keep the soil structure intact.
After the Burg family partnered with the winery in 2016, operations and hospitality moved to the Carlton farm. The tasting room is a restored 1916 farmhouse with porches wrapping the building, alongside a century-old red barn used for events and tastings, lawns for picnicking, and apple, pear and cherry trees guests are welcome to pick from in season.
