About Element 79 Vineyards
Element 79 Vineyards takes its name from gold, the periodic table's 79th element, a nod to the Gold Rush history of the region and to 1979, the year the owners married and began the partnership that led them here. They first fell for the Fair Play area on trips to find a Christmas tree, and eventually built their 70 acre estate at 2,400 feet in the Fair Play AVA, the California appellation with the highest average elevation.
Estate grown Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot and Syrah come from the lower vineyard, while Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier grow up top in decomposed granite soil. Winemaker Scott trained at UC Davis and worked at Gloria Ferrer, Vineyard 29 and New Zealand's Elephant Hill before taking the helm here in 2010, earning 90 plus scores from Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast along the way. Tastings run daily from 11am to 5pm as a seated flight of five wines, with Wine Country Tapas served Friday through Sunday.
