About Enkidu Wine

Enkidu Wine is a small, independently owned Sonoma winery whose name comes from the Epic of Gilgamesh, where Enkidu is a wild man raised by animals and gradually civilized, a metaphor the winery embraces for the raw grape refined into fine wine. Founded in 2004, it recently passed to new owners, Catherine and Matt Francis, who have carried on its focus on small-lot, hand-crafted bottlings, with Rebecca Call making the wines.

The range is unusually broad and draws fruit from top growers across the North Coast. Enkidu works in three great traditions at once: Rhone varietals like Grenache, Syrah and a GSM rose; Bordeaux reds, including a Cabernet that has earned Best of Class honors and near-perfect scores; and Burgundy grapes, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, alongside Sauvignon Blanc, Petite Sirah and old-vine Zinfandel. The wines are aromatic, expressive and well decorated at competition.

The tasting room sits in the Carneros corner of Sonoma, minutes from the plaza off Highway 121, with a courtyard and an elegant barrel room. Visits are relaxed and hospitable, vineyard and production tours come with the tastings, and charcuterie is on hand for lingering.

A small, independent Carneros winery named for the Epic of Gilgamesh, pouring an award-winning Rhone-to-Bordeaux range.
