About Favero Vineyards
Favero Vineyards is a tiny, family-owned estate on the rocky hillsides of Lovall Valley, just outside the town of Sonoma. Fred Favero, raised in a close Italian-American family in San Francisco, planted his first three acres here in 1992 and has built the whole operation largely with his own hands, clearing the rugged hillside, planting the vines, farming the fruit and even digging the underground cave where the wines are made. He and his wife, Ginger, run the place, and Fred crafts the entire production himself.
The wines reflect his Italian roots. The estate specializes in Sangiovese and a proprietary Sangiovese-Cabernet blend called Monte di Sassi, made in a style that looks to Chianti Classico and the Super Tuscans, farmed without commercial pesticides and aged at length in French oak. Production is very limited.
Visits are by appointment only and genuinely personal. Guests call ahead to arrange a private tasting and a tour of the owner-built caves, taking in the scenic hillside setting. It is a hands-made, one-family operation of the sort that is increasingly rare in Sonoma Valley.
