About Flâneur Wines
Flâneur Wines pours in the Madsen Grain Elevator, a Carlton landmark whose original section went up in the 1890s. The south building that now holds the tasting room was extended piecemeal between 1890 and 1930, and the north tower followed in 1950. Flâneur moved in after restoration finished in 2019, having previously poured a few doors away at 128 South Pine Street in what had been the Scott Paul building.
Marty Doerschlag founded the winery in 2013 after selling his first company; he had run a design and architecture firm, which goes some way to explaining the building. The name comes from Baudelaire's flâneur, the unhurried wanderer of mid-nineteenth-century Paris, and the operating idea is that the mind works best at a slow pace.
Anthony Sereni makes the wine from 44 acres of organically dry-farmed estate fruit across two sites: La Belle Promenade in the Chehalem Mountains and Flânerie Vineyard on Ribbon Ridge. The range runs wider than most of the neighbourhood, taking in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay alongside Gamay, Pinot Meunier, Gruner Veltliner, Aligote and traditional method sparkling.
The Classic Tasting is a five-wine flight taken inside the elevator or out in the courtyard. A Reserve Tasting runs about ninety minutes by appointment in the Library on the mezzanine. There is a second tasting site as well, the Old Blue Barn out at La Belle Promenade, if you would rather look at the vineyard than the architecture.
