About Freemark Abbey Winery
Freemark Abbey is named for a combination of three founding partners' surnames — Free, Mark, and Abbey — compressed into a single estate identity that sounds like a medieval English monastery but is in fact a California wine marketing achievement from the early twentieth century. The estate's true founding dates to 1886, making it one of Napa Valley's most historically significant wine properties.
The St. Helena estate is best known for two vineyard-designated Cabernet Sauvignons that have earned decades of critical recognition: the Bosché Vineyard Cabernet (from a Rutherford Bench site across the highway from the winery) and the Sycamore Vineyards Cabernet (from estate St. Helena blocks). Both represent the kind of long-term single-vineyard commitment that gives Napa Valley Cabernet its greatest depth.
Wine Spectator has scored Freemark Abbey's Bosché and Sycamore Cabernets at 90–94 points across multiple consecutive vintages. The daily walk-in tasting room in the historic stone building on the St. Helena Highway is one of Napa Valley's most atmospheric wine experiences.
