About Grgich Hills Estate
Grgich Hills was founded in 1977 by Mike Grgich, the Croatian-born winemaker whose 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay had just beaten top French Burgundies at the Judgment of Paris, and Austin Hills of the Hills Bros. coffee family. Grgich broke ground on the Rutherford winery on July 4, 1977, and quickly built a reputation for world-class Chardonnay and Zinfandel.
The winery renamed itself Grgich Hills Estate once it became 100% estate-grown across five Napa Valley vineyards, and later adopted Regenerative Organic certification in 2022. Mike Grgich died in 2023 at age 100, and the winery continues under his daughter Violet Grgich and grandnephew Ivo Jeramaz.
