About Grgich Hills Estate

Grgich Hills Estate is a Rutherford-area winery with a direct connection to one of the most important figures in modern California wine. Miljenko "Mike" Grgich became internationally known through the Chardonnay that won the white-wine portion of the 1976 Judgment of Paris before founding Grgich Hills with the Hills family. The estate presents that history in a welcoming tasting-room format rather than requiring a private collector appointment.

The portfolio includes Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and other estate wines from vineyard sites across several Napa Valley appellations. Guided experiences can compare the influence of place, explore the winery's Croatian roots or focus on specific varieties. The available flights change, giving repeat visitors reasons to return without turning the page into a fixed bottle list.

The tasting room is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Walk-ins are welcomed, while guided reservations are offered based on availability. Experiences range from short introductory tastings to longer seated comparisons and member-only formats. Large groups and private events need advance coordination. The winery's broad access makes it more flexible than many Rutherford estates.

The Highway 29 location is easy to include between St. Helena and Rutherford appointments. Outdoor areas and a relaxed service model allow families and guests traveling with a leashed dog to visit, although only adults may taste wine. The atmosphere is educational but approachable, making the winery useful for guests who want history without a highly formal presentation.

Grgich Hills is a strong first stop for travelers interested in Napa history, Chardonnay or a broad estate portfolio. Walk-ins create flexibility, but a reservation remains helpful for a specific guided experience or busy weekend. Guests should confirm the current flight, group policy and outdoor seating when children or a dog are part of the plan.

What Wino Notion Loved

Founded by the Judgment of Paris winemaker,Mike Grgich made the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay that famously beat French Burgundies in 1976, then started his own winery the very next year.
Fully estate-grown across five vineyards,Grgich Hills renamed itself "Estate" once all its fruit came from its own Napa Valley land, spanning Rutherford, Carneros, Calistoga, and beyond.
A century of winemaking, honored to the end,Mike Grgich lived to 100, celebrating his centennial with two commemorative wines before his death in 2023, with the winery still run by his family today.
"Wino Notion likes that Grgich Hills combines a major Napa wine story with unusually approachable visitor access. Walk-ins, families and leashed dogs can be accommodated while more serious guests can reserve a focused appellation or heritage experience."
