About Haakon Lenai Vineyard
Haakon/Lenai is styled with a slash and pronounced ock-en la-nay. Both names belong to the children of the family who founded it, which is as good an explanation of the winery's scale and intent as any.
The property runs to thirty-five acres in the Dundee Hills, farmed biodynamically, and the tasting room sits in the middle of the vineyard rather than at the edge of it. The views take in the surrounding vineyard sites and Mount Hood beyond.
Production is deliberately tiny: around five hundred cases a year of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, made only from the estate. Those wines are not distributed in the usual way and can be found at the tasting room and through a short list of retailers, which makes visiting the main way to drink them.
The room also pours Purple Hands, a separate Dundee producer whose single-vineyard wines come from several AVAs, so a visit covers both a narrow estate range and a broader survey of the valley. Walk-ins are taken subject to staffing, and groups of eight or more should call ahead. One practical note the winery makes itself: the driveway is off Red Hills Road, and Look Drive will not get you there.
