About Happy Canyon Vineyard

Happy Canyon Vineyard is the Barrack family's estate winery on Piocho Ranch, tucked into the undulating hills at the easternmost edge of the Santa Ynez Valley in the Happy Canyon of Santa Barbara AVA, the warmest corner of the valley and one of California's smallest appellations, approved in 2009.

The estate is devoted to Bordeaux varieties, organically and sustainably hand-farmed, with consulting winemaker Doug Margerum involved since the first bottle. The lineup runs from the flagship Cabernet Franc-based Piocho blend and the Ten-Goal and Brand reds to a Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon white and Chukker, a nouveau-styled blend released each Easter. Piocho is a Native American word meaning where the two rivers meet and go to heaven, for the two creek beds that join at the ranch's edge.

The ranch is equally famous for polo: two regulation-sized fields and a stable of polo ponies share the property with the vines, and the family fields its own Piocho polo team. Guests taste the wines at the Happy Canyon Vineyard tasting room in downtown Santa Barbara's Presidio neighborhood, and the ranch also offers farm-stay cottages for club members.
